Message tracking: the details.

Once Messente sends a message to any given mobile phone number, it travels through the mobile network operator’s systems (Telia, Vodafone, Orange etc.). The mobile operator then sends the SMS message to their subscriber. In response, the mobile phone sends the operator metadata, confirming the delivery of the message. This confirmation is called a delivery report.

The network operator forwards each report to Messente and we present it to our clients as a status update. The process is repeated for every single message sent through Messente’s messaging platform.

Delivery reports for API customers are automatically forwarded to their servers. In the instance messages are sent through our web tool, the status summary is displayed immediately after clicking the ‘send’ button.


Informative, yet simple reports.

There are three status indications for messages sent via Messente’s tools:

  1. Delivered - the message has been received by the recipient’s mobile phone.
  2. Sent - the message has been sent, but confirmation from the mobile network operator has not yet been received. 
  3. Undelivered - the mobile network operator has failed to deliver the message.
Depending on the mobile network, delivery reports typically take one to two seconds to arrive. However, delivery reports may take a bit longer when sending messages in large batches.

All delivery reports are immediately passed on to a customer’s server, or displayed through the dashboard on our website, enabling real time tracking. Download historical reports in the “reports” section of the dashboard.

Why real time tracking is important for your business.

Tracking functionality provides several important benefits to the business.

The ability to evaluate the reliability of the messaging channels used to deliver messages poses to be the most obvious benefit. If your current messaging partner does not openly share this data, you cannot evaluate their quality of service in which you’re investing.

Immediately reacting to undelivered transactional messages is only possible through real time tracking. For example, if a delivery notification from a courier fails to send, the delivery company’s customer service team is notified, and has the prompt opportunity to call the customer to confirm delivery. Or, if a message confirming a successful restaurant booking is not delivered, an email to the customer is triggered to confirm the reservation.

Real time tracking in conjunction with bulk messaging validates the accuracy of phone numbers in your client database. If your business regularly sends notifications to top customers, repeated undelivered statuses indicate an outdated or incorrect phone number.
